Course Overview
A career as a Deck or Engine officer in the Merchant Navy begins with two hurdles. The first is a good IMU-CET rank, which every DG Shipping-approved maritime institute uses for admission. The second is selection by a shipping company for sponsorship, which secures the cadet’s onboard training and first job at sea.
The OGC–Dehradun Defence Academy Merchant Navy Coaching prepares students for both in one structured course. It is designed for Class 12 PCM students and pass-outs aiming for B.Sc Nautical Science, B.Tech Marine Engineering or the Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS).

IMU-CET preparation covers all five sections of the UG paper: English, General Aptitude, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics at Class 12 level. Classes are supported by daily practice papers, previous year question papers, free e-books, handbooks and full-length mock tests in the computer-based format. Regular tests build the speed needed for 200 questions in 3 hours, and help students handle the negative marking.
Sponsorship preparation focuses on what shipping companies look for when selecting cadets. Students practise company-style written tests in PCM, English and aptitude, get familiar with psychometric and personality tests, and take mock interviews on motivation, ship knowledge and life at sea.
TheStudents learn from Merchant Navy captains Capt. Ankur Aggarwal and Capt. Ishan Arya, who share first-hand experience of bridge operations, cargo work and emergencies at sea. Subjects are taught by Saurabh Kumar (English), Jitin Kumar (Physics), and Ashu Malik and Aarav Sharma (Mathematics). Interview training is led by Shashi Shekhar.
SpokenSpoken English and personality development sessions build the confidence needed in interviews and on board.
EveryA library, Wi-Fi and dedicated doubt-clearing sessions support focused self-study. By combining entrance preparation, sponsorship training, interview practice and career guidance, the course gives aspiring cadets a clear path from Class 12 to their first ship.

MERCHANT NAVY COACHING FAQs
Clear answers about IMU-CET, company sponsorship, the course, fees and admissions.
What does OGC-DDA's Merchant Navy Coaching include?
The course covers complete IMU-CET preparation in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, English and General Aptitude, along with training for company sponsorship tests and interviews, mock tests, study material, spoken English and mentoring by Merchant Navy captains.
Who can join the course?
Students in Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, and those who have already passed Class 12 with PCM, can join. Both boys and girls are welcome.
Is IMU-CET compulsory for the Merchant Navy?
For B.Sc Nautical Science, B.Tech Marine Engineering and DNS, DG Shipping-approved institutes admit students on the basis of their IMU-CET rank.
What is company sponsorship, and why does it matter?
Sponsorship means a shipping company selects you as a cadet before or during your pre-sea course. It secures your onboard training and first job at sea. Companies select cadets through written tests, psychometric assessments, interviews and a medical check. For DNS, sponsorship is generally needed to get a seat.
When should I start preparing?
IMU-CET is held once a year, usually in May. Starting about six months before the exam gives enough time to cover the syllabus, take regular mock tests and prepare for sponsorship tests.
Does the academy guarantee sponsorship?
No coaching institute can guarantee sponsorship, because shipping companies select cadets on merit. We prepare you thoroughly for each stage of their selection process.
Are library and self-study facilities available?
Yes. Students have access to a library, quiet study spaces and structured self-study hours with academic guidance.
Does the academy provide study material?
Yes. Students receive DPPs, previous year question papers, free e-books, handbooks and mock tests for IMU-CET preparation.
Can I visit the campus before admission?
Yes. Students and parents are welcome to visit the classrooms, training facilities and faculty before deciding.
What is the admission process?
Register online, pay the registration fee, choose your course and batch, and submit the full course fee to confirm admission.
What is the registration fee?
The registration fee is ₹1,000. It is separate from the course fee and is non-refundable.
