Highest Rank In The Indian Army: Field Marshal

In the Indian Army, the highest rank ever awarded is Field Marshal.

It is a five-star general officer rank and is awarded as an honorary distinction for exceptional service to the nation. The rank is not part of the regular command structure and is conferred only in rare circumstances.

Field Marshal Rank Overview

Field Marshal is a ceremonial rank and is considered above the rank of General, which is the highest active rank in the Indian Army. Officers appointed to this rank hold it for life and are not subject to retirement.

The rank is typically awarded in recognition of outstanding military leadership during wartime or for significant contributions to the armed forces.

The rank of Field Marshal in India was introduced after independence. It has been awarded only twice, reflecting its exclusivity and prestige.

  • Sam Manekshaw was promoted to Field Marshal in 1973 following his leadership during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, which led to the creation of Bangladesh.
  • K. M. Cariappa, the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Army, was conferred the rank in 1986 in recognition of his role in shaping the post-independence Indian Army.

How Is It Different From General?

While a General is the highest active rank in the Indian Army, Field Marshal goes beyond it. A General commands the army and retires after service.

A Field Marshal, on the other hand, is an honorary rank with no retirement and is awarded for lifetime contribution.
