YOUR OTA JOURNEY

Course Overview

The Officers Training Academy (OTA) is one of India’s prestigious military training institutions, preparing graduates to become commissioned officers in the Indian Army through the Short Service Commission (SSC). Candidates aspiring to join OTA can appear for the Combined Defence Services (CDS) examination conducted by UPSC twice a year. The OTA entry written examination consists of two papers: English and General Knowledge, followed by the SSB interview, which evaluates a candidate’s personality, leadership qualities and officer-like attributes.

Building on the success of our classroom coaching in Dehradun, OGC–Dehradun Defence Academy has launched OTA Online Coaching. Graduates can now prepare for the CDS-OTA examination from anywhere, at any time, making quality defence exam preparation accessible to aspirants across the country.

The course covers both written papers, Mathematics and the General Ability Test, through interactive live classes and 1,000+ hours of recorded video lectures. Our faculty bring years of experience in teaching for defence exams, and every lecture can be paused and rewatched at your own pace.

Revision is built in. You get books and e-books, exam-focused notes, previous year question papers (PYQs) and daily practice quizzes, so you study a little every day instead of cramming before the exam.

The programme includes rigorous physical training under ACE-certified trainers, working towards targets such as a 2.4 km run in 15 minutes, push-ups, sit-ups, chin-ups and rope climbing, with indoor and outdoor sports facilities. Communication lectures by TOEFL-certified trainers strengthen confidence for the interview.

A full mock test series in the real OTA pattern, with negative marking, shows you exactly where you stand. Detailed analysis and solutions after every test point to the topics you still need to work on.

The course is built to give quality OTA preparation at an affordable price, with plans starting at ₹10,999 for 6 months. Faculty guidance, doubt sessions and communication skills lectures for the SSB interview mean you’re never preparing alone.

What is the OTA exam?

he OTA exam is the Officers’ Training Academy entry of the Combined Defence Services Examination (CDSE), conducted by UPSC twice a year. Candidates choose OTA as a preference in the CDS application.

Selected candidates train at the Officers’ Training Academy, Chennai, and are commissioned into the Indian Army on a Short Service Commission. Selection involves the written examination, SSB interview, medical examination and final merit.

Candidates must meet the nationality, age, education and medical standards in the UPSC notification.

• Education: Graduation in any discipline from a recognised university.
• Age: 19–25 years.
• Men & Women: Both are eligible for OTA.
• Marital status: As specified for men and women in the notification.
• Final-year students: Eligible to apply, subject to submitting proof of passing by the date in the notification.

The permitted date-of-birth range changes with every examination. Students should always check the latest UPSC notification before applying.

• English – 2 hours – 100 marks
• General Knowledge – 2 hours – 100 marks
• Total written: 200 · SSB: 200 · Total: 400

There is negative marking. One-third of the marks for a question is deducted for a wrong answer. There is no penalty for an unanswered question. OTA candidates do not write the Elementary Mathematics paper.

English: Grammar, vocabulary, synonyms and antonyms, comprehension, error spotting, sentence improvement and para jumbles.

General Knowledge: History, Geography, Indian Polity, Economy, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, environment, defence and national and international current affairs.

The syllabus is broad and the exam cycle is short, which is why structured preparation with regular mock tests makes a real difference.
