In 2017 Minister of State for Defence Dr. Subhash Bhamre gave a statement that moves are underway to allow the entry of women into combat roles and a proposal is being actively considered to allow admission of girls at the National Defence Academy (NDA). At present only male candidates can join the National Defence Academy after 12th or 12th appearing but Girls can apply for nda soon.
There are many other ways female candidates can apply for Indian Armed Forces.
Here is the details of entry women can apply to join Indian Armed Forces after graduation or in final year/semester:
ENTRY SCHEME IN INDIAN ARMY:
1) Short service commission (women) Technical to OTA, Chennai – Direct SSB interview based on CGPA/Percentage in Graduation
Women technical graduates are called on for direct interview for recruitment into Indian Army for various technical fields like ECE, CSE, ME, etc based on the CGPA or Percentage in their graduation. One can register and apply through www.joinindianarmy.nic.in for SSC (w)Tech. After applying short listed candidates (Based on cut off marks – this might vary from batch to batch so do not compare previous year cut-offs to apply, just grab the opportunity) will be called for an SSB interview. Candidates who are successful in SSB interview will undergo a medical standards check up (Army medical standards). And finally candidates who get into merit list and medically fit will get their joining letter to OTA, Chennai.
2) NCC Special entry to join OTA, Chennai – SSB interview (Direct entry) based on CGPA/Percentage in Graduation and C certificate “A” or “B” grade.
Cadets of National Cadet Corps, with “C” certificate A or B grade, can avail the direct entry (SSB interview) to get into Indian Army. Cadets have to register and apply through www.joinindianarmy.nic.in for NCC special entry. After applying, short listed candidates (Based on cut off marks – this might vary from batch to batch so do not compare previous year cut-offs to apply, just grab the opportunity) will be called on for SSB interview. Candidates, who are successful in SSB interview, will undergo a medical standards check up (Army medical standards). And finally candidates who get into merit list and medically fit will get their joining letter to OTA, Chennai. This is a privileged entry for NCC cadets who have been exposed to Indian Armed forces structure and know how it works.

3) Combined Defence Services Exam to join OTA, Chennai – Based on written exam score interview will be called on.
The Combined Defence Services exam is conducted twice a year by the Union Public Service Commission to select candidates for SSB interview. Candidates who clear the CDS exam will be called on for an SSB interview. Candidates, who are successful in SSB interview, will undergo a medical standards check up (Army medical standards). And finally candidates who get into merit list and medically fit will get their joining letter to OTA, Chennai. This entry will be a non-technical entry, so the educational qualification is open and can have any graduation.
Age limit: Unmarried 19-25 years eligible to apply.
Education Qualification: Any graduate or appearing in last year.
4) Judge Advocate General:
Age limit: Any unmarried LLB graduate aged between 21-27 years is eligible to apply.
Education and Examination: There is no need to attend any CEE for this entry except for a minimum of 55% in LLB.
ENTRY SCHEME IN INDIAN AIR FORCE:
AFCAT Entries: Female candidates who want to fly high in the sky have to clear an AFCAT which is held twice in a year. It is a written exam and those who qualify in this exam are called for an SSB interview.
1) Flying branch:
Eligibility: Women candidates of age 19 to 23 years can opt for flying branch.
Educational Qualification:
A candidate should be having a Graduate degree in any discipline from a recognized university with aggregate of 60% marks and have passed Math and Physics at 10+2 level OR B.E/B.Tech degree from a recognized university with aggregate of minimum 60% marks.
2) Technical Branch:
Eligibility: Female engineering candidates of age 18 to 28 years can opt for the technical branch. There are two types of technical service whose educational qualification conditions are given below:
Educational Qualifications:
Aeronautical Engineer (Mechanical): Minimum four-year degree course from a recognized university with aggregate of minimum 60% marks and qualification in at least eight subjects out of eighteen as per notified in the advertisement OR cleared Section A and B exam of Associate membership of Institution of engineers or Aeronautical society of India in regular courses.
Aeronautical Engineer (Electrical): Minimum four-year degree course from a recognized university with aggregate of minimum 60% marks and qualification in at least eight subjects as per notified in the advertisement OR cleared Section A and B exam of Associate membership of Institution of engineers or Aeronautical society of India or graduate membership exam of the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers in regular courses.
3) Ground Duty Branches:
Eligibility: For graduates: 20 to 23 years, Post Graduates: 20 to 25 years, LLB: 20 to 26 years, M.Ed/ PhD/ CA: 20 to 27 years.
There are three types of services in Ground Duty Branches whose educational qualification conditions are given below:
- a) Administration and Logistics: Graduate in any discipline from a recognized university with aggregate of 60% marks OR a Post Graduate degree/ diploma in any discipline from a recognized university with aggregate of minimum 60% marks.
Education: Post Graduate degree in any discipline with aggregate of minimum 50% mark
- b) Accounts: Graduate degree in any commerce with an aggregate of minimum 60% marks OR a Postgraduate degree/ diploma in Commerce (M Com) / CA / ICWA with an aggregate of minimum 50% marks.
Non-AFCAT Entry (CDSE and FTS):
- c) Meteorology Branch:
Eligibility: Age group in this entry is 20 to 25 years and 27 years for PhD candidates.
Educational Qualifications: To be eligible for this entry candidates must be having a Postgraduate degree in any science stream / Maths / Statistics / Geography / CS / EVS / Physics / Geo-physics etc. with minimum 50% aggregate and have scored 55% marks both in Maths and Physics at graduation level. Final year students can also apply for it.
4) NCC Special Entry Indian Air Force:
NCC Air Wing Senior Division ‘C’ certificate acquired
Education Qualification: Minimum of 60% marks each in Maths & Physics at 10+2 level and Graduate with minimum three year degree course in any discipline from a recognized University who have attained minimum 60% marks or equivalent or minimum of 60% marks each in Maths & Physics at 10+2 level and BE/B.Tech degree (4 years course) with a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent or cleared section A & B Exam of Associate Membership of Institute Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India from a recognized University with minimum 60% marks or equivalent are also eligible
Age Limit: 20 to 24 years
ENTRY SCHEME IN INDIAN NAVY:
1) Naval Architecture: One can apply for it through UES or as per the latest notification.
Age limit: An engineering graduate aged between19½ – 25 is eligible to apply.
Educational Qualification: The candidates must possess at least 60% marks in BE/B. Tech Degree in any one of the following stream:
1) MechanicalCivil
2) Aeronautical
3) Metallurgy
4) Naval Architecture
2) Observer: Observer officer operates various equipment including sonics, radars, sonars and communication equipment. As an airborne technician, he/she will be flying on board Naval aircraft of the Indian Navy.
Age limit: An engineering graduate aged between19 – 24 is eligible to apply.
Educational Qualification: BE/B.Tech degree in any discipline with Physics & Maths in 12th standard.
3) Logistics /Works:
Age limit: Candidates aged between 19½-25 with any of the following educational qualifications.
Educational Qualification:
- a) For Logistics Cadre:
1) BE/B Tech in any discipline with 1st class
2) MBA with 1st class
3) B Sc/B Com/B Sc (IT) with 1st class and PG Diploma in Finance/Logistics/Supply Chain
Mgt/Material Mgt
4) MCA/M.Sc (IT) with 1st class
- b) For Works: BE/B Tech (Civil)/B Architect
- c) For Catering:Sc(HM)/MBA(HM)/B Sc or BA with 1st class and PG Diploma in HM
4) Law:
Age limit: Candidates aged between 22- 27 are eligible to apply.
Educational Qualification: Candidates should possess a degree in Law qualifying them for enrolment as advocates under the Advocates Act, 1961.
5) ATC:
Age limit: Candidates aged between 19½ – 25 are eligible to apply.
Educational Qualification: BE/B.Tech degree in any discipline with Physics & Maths in 12th standard.
6) Education entry:
Age limit: Candidates aged between 21 – 25 are eligible to apply.
Educational Qualification:
1) BE/B.Tech degree in any discipline with Physics & Maths in 12th standard.
2) A second-class Master’s degree from a recognised university in Physics or Mathematics. Candidates possessing Master’s degree in physics should have studied Mathematics at least at the subsidiary level at the degree standard and those possessing master’s degree in Mathematics should have studied Physics at least at the subsidiary level at degree standard.
3) A second-class Master’s degree from a recognised university in Chemistry or English. Candidates possessing Master’s degree in chemistry should have studied Physics at least at the subsidiary level at the degree standard and those possessing Master’s degree in English should have studied Physics or Mathematics up to the intermediate or equivalent standard.
4) An engineering degree in Mechanical, Electrical or engineering in Computer Science/Technology.
5) A second-class Master’s degree from a recognised university in computer application or computer science. Candidates should have studied either Physics or Mathematics at their graduation level.
6) A postgraduate degree from a recognised university in Humanities (Economics/History/ Political Science).
7) CPL Holders: Candidates who hold a valid and current CPL issued by DGCA (India). The age limit is 19 to 25 years.
8) Naval Armament Inspectorate (NIA) : The maximum age is 25 years and minimum age is 19 ½.
Education Qualification: Aspirants should possess BE/B Tech in Electrical/ Electronics/ Mechanical/ Production/ Instrumentation/ IT/ Chemical/ Metallurgy/ Aerospace Engineering.

Education Qualification: Candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree in any discipline.Candidates, who have appeared in the graduation examination and are waiting for their results, can also apply for UPSC CAPF Exam. But, the admission to CAPF exam would be provisional until the proof of passing the examination after qualifying the CAPF exam is not produced.
