Course Overview
Joining the Indian Armed Forces as an officer requires more than clearing the NDA written examination. It demands strong academics, physical fitness, effective communication, disciplined habits and the qualities assessed during the SSB.
The OGC–Dehradun Defence Academy NDA Foundation Course brings these essential areas together in one structured residential programme for students in Classes 6–12. It allows students to continue their school education while beginning early and systematic preparation for the NDA and SSB.

School academics remain a priority through concept-based teaching, regular revision, assessments, customised study material and doubt-clearing sessions. Alongside school preparation, students receive focused NDA written coaching in Mathematics, English, Science and General Knowledge, supported by weekly tests, digital learning resources and performance tracking.
SSB preparation begins gradually as part of the student’s overall development rather than as a short-term crash course. Students practise PPDT, WAT, TAT, SRT, group discussions, lecturettes, GTO tasks and mock interviews. The SSB panel includes Colonel Anupam (Retd.), trained GTO; Colonel S. Pande (Retd.), SSB Interviewing Officer; Colonel I. P. S. Rana (Retd.), Psychology; and Shashi Shekhar, Ex-Assistant Commandant and two-time SSB qualifier. Practical training is supported by a dedicated GTO ground and regular individual feedback.
The programme also includes supervised morning PT, strength and endurance training, gym sessions, yoga, sports and tournament exposure. Outdoor learning experiences help students develop teamwork, resilience, independence and practical confidence.
Spoken English, debates, group discussions and personality-development sessions strengthen communication and self-expression. Individual mentoring, academic supervision and regular progress reports help students remain consistent while keeping parents informed.
A supervised hostel, dedicated wardens, CCTV surveillance, nutritious meals, library facilities and structured self-study hours provide a secure and focused residential environment. By integrating academics, NDA preparation, SSB training, fitness and personal development, the programme builds a strong long-term foundation for students aspiring to serve as officers in the Indian Armed Forces.

What is the NDA exam?
The National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Examination (NDA & NA EXAM) is conducted by the UPSC for students aspiring to become officers in the Indian Armed Forces after Class 12.
Through this examination, candidates can apply for the Army, Navy and Air Force wings of the National Defence Academy, as well as the 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme of the Indian Naval Academy. Selection involves a written examination, SSB assessment, medical examination and final merit.
Who is eligible to apply for NDA?
Both unmarried male and female candidates can apply, provided they meet the age, educational, nationality and medical requirements mentioned in the relevant UPSC notification.
– Army Wing: Class 12 passed or appearing students from any recognised stream.
– Air Force and Naval Wings: Class 12 passed or appearing students with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
– Indian Naval Academy: Class 12 passed or appearing students with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
– Class 11 students: Not eligible to appear for the examination, but they can begin foundation-level preparation.
The permitted date-of-birth range changes with every examination. For example, NDA II 2026 accepted candidates born between 1 January 2008 and 1 January 2011. Students should always check the latest notification before applying.
What is the NDA exam pattern and marking scheme?
The written examination consists of two objective-type papers:
- Mathematics – 2½ hours – 300 marks
- General Ability Test 2½ hours 600 marks
-Total Written Marks: 900
-SSB Test and Interview: 900
The complete selection process is therefore assessed out of 1,800 marks – 900 for the written examination and 900 for the SSB.
There is negative marking in the written exam. One-third of the marks assigned to a question is deducted for an incorrect answer. If more than one option is marked, it is treated as incorrect. There is no penalty for leaving a question unanswered
What is included in the NDA syllabus?
The NDA written examination covers Mathematics, English and General Knowledge.
Mathematics includes:
– Algebra
– Matrices and determinants
– Trigonometry
– Two- and three-dimensional geometry
– Differential calculus
– Integral calculus and differential equations
– Vector algebra
– Statistics and probability
General Ability Test includes:
– English: Grammar, vocabulary, usage, comprehension and cohesion
– Physics
– Chemistry
– General Science
– History and the Indian Freedom Movement
– Indian Constitution and administration
– Geography
– National and international current affairs
The syllabus is broad, which is why early preparation helps students strengthen concepts gradually instead of trying to cover everything close to the examination.
