Rudra is the armed variant of indigenous Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter.

In its first stage this missile was developed as a vehicle mounted ATGM (anti tank guided missile) called NAG.

But it (NAG) had a range of only 4 kms, so it was developed further and the result was Helina (helicopter mounted NAG), now Helina has a longer range and can be fired from a helicopter.

Helina and Dhruvastra operate on fire and forget mode and have all weather day and night capability. They are said to be 3rd generation missiles and work on the LOBL (lock on before launch) ,fire and forget principles.

The missiles can be programmed to strike the target in two ways I.e direct hit mode or top attack mode.
