Defence Service Staff College is a training college for officers from three wings and civil services. In this advanced training institute officers get training and upgrade their knowledge from the mechanics of soldiering to the level of conception of ideas in the sphere of the military, socio-political, economic and scientific fields. In 1905, College was set up at Devlali, Maharashtra. In 1907 it shifted to Quetta (now in Pakistan), in 1947 it shifted back to India. Defence Service Staff College is situated in Wellington (The Nilgiris), Tamil Nadu.

The first staff course of Defence Service Staff College started in April 1948. The first course had 46 officers from the Indian Army and 2 from the Indian Navy and 2 from Indian Air Force. In 149 the air wing was established and the Naval Wing in 1950 and the college was rechristened Defence Services Staff College. The school opened up its doors to officials from well disposed unfamiliar nations from the fifth course and to government workers from the 6th course. Since 1990, DSSC has been affiliated to Madras University for the award of M.Sc. degree in ‘Protection and Strategic Studies’ and perceived as an examination place for MPhil and PhD degrees.

The DSSC is a joint service institution. It functions under the Chiefs of Staff Committee and the commandant reports to the Chiefs of Staff Committee. The aim of this institution is to train officers from the three Services in command and staff functions in peace and war in inter-service and joint service environments.
